MAIN GALLERY

Nolan at Bundanon
Sidney Nolan
A Bundanon Trust exhibition

Sir Sidney Nolan (1917–1992), a giant in 20th century Australian art, was a prolific artist and the early 1980s was a creatively intense period for him. Proficient in oils and always on the look out for new means of expression, it was then that he began to experiment using spray can paint, creating layers of colour blended directly on the canvas. During a visit to Bundanon in 1982 Nolan started work on a series of ‘heads’ in Arthur Boyd’s studio. The Nolan image of the ‘head’ is strong, permitting deep expressions of emotion through energetic sweeps of colour and line.
