Finding Our Way
My Le Thi

Installations by Vietnamese-born, Australia-based artist My Le Thi explore the concept of finding identity through our shared humanity and heritage and through individual journeys within new and changing cultures.

Orphaned in the Vietnam War, My Le came to Australia as a refugee in 1985. She later returned to her former home in the central highlands of Vietnam and as an artist worked with communities to create installations from simple materials close at hand to recapture the remnants of a displaced and eroded culture which, as a result of decades of war, left little trace of any physical trappings from the past. From this process, a variety of artworks were produced and ultimately exhibited in Australia at the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Shoalhaven City Arts Centre exhibition features skeletons, which represent the universal framework that supports all mankind; solitary faces that remind us that our visage is but a coloured mask between our inner selves and the outer world; and shoes and feet that acknowledge the transformation of our cultural traditions and the print that we make or leave in our collective or personal life journey.

FOYER GALLERY

New Leaf Esoterica | Donna Huntriss

The title of this exhibition refers to the artist ‘turning over a new leaf’ at this stage of her creative path as she wants to be more diligent and re-explore the intricacies of her former works, re-examining with a new eye. It’s a new stage of maturity, dedication and a now-or-never attitude. Donna has found inspiration in formal gardens, hedges, paths and topiary forms.

ACCESS GALLERY

Testing the Waters: Reflective Moments | Laurence Ryan

Featuring photographs created using water reflections with varying degrees of light that are captured in a spilt second, constantly change, and due to the fluidity of the subject are never repeated. Reminiscent of beautiful textile designs or modern contemporary paintings these photographs have a unique ability to channel the nature and beauty of waves whether in water or light.

GREEN GALLERY

Proggy Rug Making in Shoalhaven | Narrawilly Proggy Ruggers

Proggy and hooky rugging is the art of making rugs and wall hangings from recycled materials like old clothes, blankets, plastic bags and wool yarns. The rugs have evolved into a modern eco-friendly art form exhibited in galleries, hospitals and community spaces. In a modern world that finally recognises the need to re-cycle the exhibition by the Narrawilly group of their creative craft sets a great example to the wider community.

A Creative Life | The Work of Elizabeth Emery 1919–2004

An exhibition documenting the work of local artist Elizabeth Emery from her student days at the National Art School, to her work as a graphic designer and painter, and through to the modernist influence on her work toward the end of her life. The tensions between traditional subject matter and the transition to modernism is fascinating, given the rural context in which the artist worked.
